The Philosophy of Guild Wars
Hey guys, I'm writing a philosophical paper about the imagination and make-believe.
I'm inclined to argue that when individuals play role-playing games such as GW, that they DO NOT imagine that they are a part of the same fictional world that their character is in.
I'm still very early on in my brainstorming, and would like to know what you guys think.
When you play games like this, especially (but not exclusively) ones in which you are interacting with 'real people,' do you imagine that you are part of the fictional world?
Any and all comments are welcomed!

I think it differs from person to person. While I would think that the average gamer just plays the game to have fun without needing to immerse themselves in the virtual world, there are also players that have the most fun when they are able to make-believe that they are part of this fantasy world and try and act in such a way (role-players).

I think that, being part of a role playing universe, means you get part of that fantasy. Like me, when i dream bout this game, I don't dream bout me sitting behind a pc and playing, but I dream bout being my character.
The point is, that in a healthy situation when playing you always keep a touch of reality. So when your hungry, you eat. When you tired you sleep. When you need to go, well you go. If that threshold of sense of reality gets passed and you forgot to work, sleep, go to school or eat, playing this game isn't an hobby anymore, but an obsession and an adiction. So the amount of sense of reality differs from one person to the other. Some go too far, but most have a good balance.

It's simple. Playing with others will always break immersion into the storyline dictated by the game. The only fix would be a game with no story, only with some kind of lore to the things you see and only the action of the players to dictate the future. As EVE online.
